Today was the "First Day of School" for Christmas Carol 2013 at the Hanover Theatre. This is the first time since I've been in that show that we've had rehearsals prior to Thanksgiving. I am thankful to be back early and was extremely excited to see those familiar faces from above. It's great connecting with the new cast members while reconnecting with castmates from years past. It's especially rewarding when your castmates are wearing matching shirts. Here we come a wassailing! </div>

I think today was our best show, yet! The whole cast seemed to be savoring every moment. There was even a marriage proposal during the curtain speech (she said "YES"). Actually, 2 minutes after the "yes", Tiny Tim (Elizabeth Brytowski) said , "What did that guy just say ask her?". When I told her the couple just got engaged on the stage she squealed with delight...just a little slow on the uptake. ;) <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lea- our lovely walk-on role <br />

<br />
There was also a walk-role in the show today. Lea, a high school student from Notre Dame told me her dad had won a radio contest awarding her the prize of "cast member for a day". She did a wonderful job sharing the stage with us for 3 numbers . And her dad was there to watch (I am sure he was there with many others supporting Lea's Hanover debut!). <br />

In the midst of our busy and exciting weekend, we recorded two pieces from the show for the blog. The boys will probably be jealous when they see how productive we were. <br />

I was especially excited that avid theatre supporter, enthusiast, and friend, Ed Sato, was in attendance. He has seen "A Christmas Carol" at the Hanover Theatre multiple times every year. And I am always happy when I bump into him at shows all over New England. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Steve Gagliastro and Carola LaCoste</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Current castmates, former castmates, the crew, and most of the creative team were also in attendance. It was a great celebration of the production. Everyone was dressed in their "party clothes" , which was a big transformation from the usual petticoats, cloaks, and bonnets we've been wearing. It's hard to believe we will only being wearing our costumes for one more show! <br />

The hour long program airs every Sunday morning from 9am-10am, offering listeners a sneak peek of what goes on behind the scenes during some of the hottest shows coming to the theatre. Lisa Condit, co-host and director of marketing & PR, recently sat down with some of the people responsible for transforming the classic Charles Dickens tale of A Christmas Carol to New England's largest and most spectacular production on stage at The Hanover Theatre.<br />
<br />
Hear from costume designer, Gail Buckley, who is responsible for creating the colorful costumes for each of the characters in this special adaptation by The Hanover Theatre's executive director, Troy Siebels.<br />

I think her advice is timeless, so I thought I'd reiterate.<br />

Note, while Ilyse is the choreographer of "A Christmas Carol" at the Hanover Theatre, she is no longer a member of the cast as well. I DO miss her in the dressing room very much, but I am happy I got to see her during rehearsals!<br />

In his honor, I put together a clip about our very own "Cake Boss of Cake Balls"-Kim Kalunian. <br />

WARNING-this has very little to do with the show, except that it does demonstrate how passionate actors are about food, especially while performing. Yum. <br />

For my fiancee, Steve Gagliastro, and I, it was just our first time performing the show this year. Many others in the cast, though made their first appearance at the Hanover Theatre this evening. And for the lovely 6 year old Elizabeth Brytowski who plays Tiny Tim, today was her first opening night ever! I was very excited as Elizabeth and I held hands backstage during the overture while we waited to enter for "Deck the Halls". Sharing the joy of theatre with young performers is an awesome responsibility! <br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Xa0efLCgDco/UMwceA7GW0I/AAAAAAAAAHY/MFWLeTR6E1w/s1600/IMG_1406.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Xa0efLCgDco/UMwceA7GW0I/AAAAAAAAAHY/MFWLeTR6E1w/s320/IMG_1406.JPG" width="271" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Elizabeth Brytowski and Andrew Haserlat</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
However, Andrew Haserlat (Bob Cratchit) and I were both a little nervous for Elizabeth because there were a lot of adjustments given to her earlier in the day at our final dress rehearsal. Some of her entrances and choreography changed along with subtler notes related to her text delivery. This 6 year old had a lot to keep track of so Andrew, myself, and the Child Wrangler (her Mom!) did our part to remind Elizabeth about little details along the way. She nodded her head like she was listening, but I've worked with kids enough to know that can be deceptive! To our relief, Elizabeth WAS listening. She remembered all of her changes and notes. She even tried some smaller suggestions with ease and was not at all thrown by the audience. I was a proud Mamma today as I watched Tiny Tim in the last scene limping downstage to say "God Bless Us" before being whisked up onto Scrooge's shoulders. I hope she is loving every minute of "A Christmas Carol"! And I do mean "playing" in many different ways because at heart the act of pretending to be someone else is a playful activity. At the same time, this is a company of professional actors and at the moment our job is to bring to life the story of "A Christmas Carol" to the patrons of the Hanover Theatre starting this Friday!<br />
<br />

We have survived our two 10 out of 12 rehearsals, which is a 12 hour technical rehearsal with a 2 hour dinner break. There is a lot of stopping and starting at this kind of rehearsal, while the actors wait for the lights, sound, and set to coordinate the perfect moves at the perfect moments! <br />
<br />
Sometimes we get a little goofy waiting at this rehearsal. Here is a picture of Bob Cratchit balancing all the hats on Fred Scrooge's head at 11pm last night: <br />
<br />
Despite appearances our show is coming together. I can't wait to open!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Christine Hamel, Dialect Coach</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This weekend the cast was visited by the wonderful, Christine Hamel! She's the dialect coach for the the Hanover Theatre's "A Christmas Carol". There's a cast of 31 this year and most of us do multiple accents in the show. We spend a good deal of time talking about what class levels our characters come from. For example, the guests at Fred Scrooge's party are a higher class and therefore mostly speak in a Standard Upper Class British accent, also known as RP (Received Pronounciation). Whereas, lower class characters like the Charwoman & Old Joe speak in a Cockney accent. Some of the actors even use Irish accents in our show.<br />
<br />
After taking notes on our run-through this Friday, Christine coached both the Youth Ensemble and the Adult Ensemble. She also worked privately with cast members. One of my personal notes from Christine involved the word "odious"; she reminded me Mrs. Cratchit needs to say "aye-dias" instead! Also she asked me to raise my class slightly by adding the "h's" back to my dialogue. So listen and make sure I apply the correction :D <br />

What I mean is that a group of us from the cast of the Hanover Theatre's "A Christmas Carol" enjoyed Lunch Time Skating at the newly opened rink in front of Worcester City Hall. The weather was perfect for the ice, my rental skates fit and the veggie hot dogs were delicious! (That's right, veggie hot dogs.) <br />
<br />
It's wonderful to share such unique bonding opportunities with your co-workers. And in this case, it's extra nice when those opportunies have the ability to add depth and color to your work. Lunch Time Skating on the Commons is, as we say in the show, "Seasonable for Christmastime."<br />
<br />
I can't wait to go back again!<br />

You may have heard the buzz; there is a new Scrooge in Worcester--this year the role is going to be played by the fabulous Jeremy Lawrence. But did you know we also have a new Future? That's right- the Ghost of Christmas Future is getting a makeover! My past 3 years performing in the show, the actor who played "Christmas Future" would wear tall stilts covered by a long skirt, he also wore a small backpack-like attachment which formed the ghost's head. This suit (not the actor) was affectionately referred to as "VINNY" --I am told that was the name on the box he lived in between shows!<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Vinny Two</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
When I walked into rehearsal yesterday, designer Nathan Lee was in a meeting with director Troy Siebels. Nathan is the current Technical Director at Worcester State University and, I am told, has done touch ups for "Vinny" over the past 3 years. For this year's production, Nathan has made a new Future. Our stage managers are affectionately calling him, "VINNY TWO". He is a much larger metal frame attached to a backback-like harness and has 2 huge foam-metal hands. Main difference= no stilts. Intially, the difference might be undetectable, but upon further examination, you may observe that VINNY TWO is a ghost who moves with more freedom and ease. Scrooge will certainly be shivering in his boots when they share the stage! <br />

I am happily refreshed from our 1st day off. It's hard to believe we have already had 3 days of rehearsals for this year's production of "A Christmas Carol" at the Hanover Theatre. </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After learning the music for "Wassail" on Friday & Saturday (in addition to many of the songs in the show), it was time to get down to business and learn the dance on Sunday with our wonderful choreographer, Ilyse Robbins. If you haven't seen the show, "Wassail" is our largest, most intricate number in the production. Since it is so big, it helps to learn all the components early on in the rehearsal process that way there is plenty of time for it to sink in. "Wasail" comes in Act One at the "Fezziwig Party" and involves, 22 members of the cast, a fiddle, 7 part harmony, fake beer, a marriage proposal, and lots of dancing! Here's some of the cast members prepping BEFORE learning the staging to "Wassail". </div>

Opening night has come and gone --- and was fantastic! We've been doing two shows a day since Friday, and one school matinee today; so the festivities have begun! The energy is palpable; in the audience and among the cast and crew. It's an amazing story with heart, and a timeless classic for everyone. As I have said, I am incredibly honored to be a part of the show, and notice always a larger, more silly looking grin on my face backstage before I go on each performance. There's only two more public performances (this Friday) so get on it!<br />
<br />
So what does an actor in Hanover Theatre's <i>A Christmas Carol</i> do on an evening off? Why, make a big batch of Wassail of course! What?! You don't know what Wassail is? Well, in the life of a Hanover Theatre <i>Christmas Carol</i> actor it is two things (well, maybe two and a half ). One: an AMAZING arrangement of a traditional Christmas carol by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Vaughan_Williams">Ralph Vaughn Williams</a> that we sing together during the Fezziwig Party scene (The scene with the Doodlebobs!!! - Look it up in our blog!) when Ebenezer Scrooge visits himself as a young man. The merriment of the Fezziwig party completely embodies the joyous tradition. Two (and a half): Wassailing is a tradition of caroling around the holidays to bless the upcoming crop of apples. It means literally "good health," and became associated with a warmed, mulled cider offered to wassailers for their song. I decided that tonight would be the perfect night to make this traditional drink for the holidays. So I scoured the interwebs and found the following lovely recipe and made it for a holiday party I am attending tomorrow night. Enjoy! (Please note: the beverage does contain alcohol, I did find a non-alcoholic version <a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/wassail-punch/">here</a>).<br />
<br />
<u>Ingredients:</u><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">8 to 10 small apples <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">1 large peeled orange stuck with whole cloves<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">8 to 10 teaspoons brown sugar<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">2 bottles dry red wine</div><div class="MsoNormal">1 teaspoon ground ginger <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">3 cloves <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">Small handful of blueberries<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">2 or 3 cinnamon sticks<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">1/2 teaspoon of allspice</div><div class="MsoNormal">2 cups sugar <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">1/2 gallon of apple cider<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">1 splash whiskey<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wassail, wassail all up in the pot!</td></tr>

Monday we will have really earned our Day Off. But before then, I wanted to take a second and share some pics from our Opening Night party on Friday! You can especially tell on the kids' faces, what a sense of accomplishment an actors feels when their show finally opens. We've had four great audiences, so far; I can't wait to share "A Christmas Carol" with even more people. :)<br /><br /><div><br /><div><br /><div><em><span style="font-size:78%;"></span></em></div><br /><div><em><span style="font-size:78%;">Carola LaCoste (SM) Peter Adams (Xmas Present) Tyler Bellmon (Young Scrooge)</span></em><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AdWwDdpEdOA/Tu2Yfs6196I/AAAAAAAAAEU/yjpdI5PaVOQ/s1600/IMG_1081.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; All the actors have finally completed their costume fittings with the talented Gail Astrid Buckley. You get a lollipop after a doctor's appointment , but after a fitting with Gail you get rehearsals shoes! It is a luxury to be able to work with your "show shoes" early on in your rehearsal process, but it truly makes a difference in the final product. This way the actors are able to have time to get comfortable doing their dance steps, lifts, any brisk movements, in the correct footwear. So if adjustments need to be made to the choreography or footwear, there is ample time.<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DdvItVuvaJQ/TuV1Rd8GSHI/AAAAAAAAACk/bf9vHIe909I/s1600/IMG_1045.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 200px; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685079047580043378" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DdvItVuvaJQ/TuV1Rd8GSHI/AAAAAAAAACk/bf9vHIe909I/s200/IMG_1045.JPG" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-962mEqLv4fA/TuV1RonjFiI/AAAAAAAAACw/4nDGtjDaF94/s1600/IMG_1047.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 200px; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685079050446640674" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-962mEqLv4fA/TuV1RonjFiI/AAAAAAAAACw/4nDGtjDaF94/s200/IMG_1047.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><span style="font-size:85%;"><em>Lynne</em> </span><em><span style="font-size:85%;">Rosenberg (Mrs. Dilber) zips up her show boots/ a pile of shoes wait for their owners at rehearsal </span><br /></em><br /></div><br /><div>Today was our last day in our rehearsal space. So we have 3 days until we get onto the stage. It's very exciting to have so many pieces together. In the last 2 rehearsals we have been doing run thrus with stops and starts. As you might have guessed that means we run the scenes until Troy stops them to fix or change something.<br /><br /><div>Today we stopped on one of my favorite parts. It's early in the first act just before the ghost of Jacob Marley arrives. Some audience members might just think they are hearing wind or some prerecorded voices, but in every production I've appeared in just before Jacob Marley appears the actors all assemble in the wings and get to make spooky noises! At 16 yrs old in my first "A Christmas Carol" production at Foothills Theatre I remember thinking it was so cool that the whole cast got to be the voice of the ghosts for a brief period of time. Mostly the actors chant "Ebenezer" or "Scrooge" during this scene or try to sound like the wind, but there is some flexibility within that. It is so fun to play with different ways to use your voice or different words you can interject in rehearsals. Today Troy stopped us for a couple of reasons during the "spooky noises" ... not enough consonants, not enough wind. I am sure we will have it perfect by opening, but until then I am happy practicing because it makes me feel a bit like a 7year old with all my friends on Halloween! "SssssscroooooooogGGGGGe" ! I love my job <3</div><br /><div></div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mANpzw6TlTg/TuMA61Mb3UI/AAAAAAAAACY/64AllKxQqgk/s1600/Christmas%2BCarol%2BScrooge.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 277px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684388165383347522" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mANpzw6TlTg/TuMA61Mb3UI/AAAAAAAAACY/64AllKxQqgk/s400/Christmas%2BCarol%2BScrooge.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><div></div><em>Dale Place in last year's production of "A Christmas Carol" at the Hanover, right before a ghost arrives! All of these things were part of the preparations for Christmas Day. We also went to church every Sunday, lit the candles each week for Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace, and put another ornament on the Advent calendar every morning. With each of these rituals, I keenly felt the anticipation, the excitement, the <span style="font-style: italic;">waiting</span> that marks the season of Advent. It was often hard as a kid - I didn't want to wait! But ultimately having to wait and prepare added suspense and made Christmas Day all the more exciting. <br /><br />Now, as an adult, I'm preparing and waiting in a slightly different way. I'm still singing lots of carols and sharing lots of baked goods with my family and this great cast. We're also preparing our lines, our choreography, and for me, my violin playing, so that we'll be ready when opening night comes. We're getting to the point where we know what we need to do and are itching to get it out in front of the audience. But there is still a lot of preparing and polishing to do, so we have to wait another whole week! It's hard, just like when my sisters and I were kids. But I know opening night will come, just like Christmas always did.<br /><br />I can't wait!clgibsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02854849632475545250noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133208602494647869.post-79578842103761423482011-12-05T22:58:00.002-05:002011-12-05T23:19:05.154-05:00A Cookie CarolHello Everyone!<div><br /><div>This is my first time contributing an entry to this blog, and I must admit, I wasn't sure what I'd write about. But I remembered, sitting here at my laptop, that a cast mate suggested I blog about what I bake. For me, like many of my other cast mates, this show is more than another job, it's a holiday tradition. And like most other holiday traditions, this one includes many, many baked goods. </div><div>Our director, Troy, often jokes that baking some of my signature sweets is part of my contract. I don't want to take the risk of finding out that this isn't a joke, and so...I bake! But I also bake because I love it, and because, I think and hope, my fellow cast and crew members do, too.</div><div><br /></div><div>So far, I've made Spice Cake <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Whoopie</span> Pies with Eggnog Cream Filling and Egg Biscuits. There will be Red Velvet Cake Balls, Chocolate Covered <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Oreos</span>, Snow Ball Cookies and possibly even Chocolate Cinnamon Croissants in the near future. </div><div><br /></div><div>But I must admit, with rehearsals, the commute and other obligations, I don't have much time to do everything from scratch. So I thought I'd take this opportunity and use this platform to share my first two (semi-scratch) recipes of the season with you, Dear Reader!</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Spice Cake <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Whoopie</span> Pies</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Cake:</div><div>1 boxed cake mix (I used spice cake!)</div><div>3 eggs</div><div>1/2 cup water</div><div>1/2 cup vegetable oil </div><div><br /></div><div>Combine ingredients and use a small ice cream scoop to place spoonfuls onto a lined baking sheet. Eat and enjoy!</div><div><br /></div><div>And for the sweet, moist and yummy... </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Egg Biscuits (my Nana's recipe)</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Combine:</div><div>1 8 oz. package cream cheese</div><div>1 1/4 stick of butter (softened)</div><div>1/2 cup sugar</div><div>2 eggs</div><div>1 tsp. vanilla</div><div>2 1/2 tsp. baking powder</div><div><br /></div><div>Slowly add 2 1/2 cups of flour. You can start with a hand mixer, but then you might want to do it by hand. The dough will be very sticky!</div><div><br /></div><div>Once combined, form into balls, press onto a baking sheet and bake at 350 until cooked, 10-12 minutes. Biscuits should not brown.</div><div><br /></div><div>While baking, make the icing. Combine:</div><div>1 <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">tblsp</span>. melted butter</div><div>1/2 tsp. vanilla </div><div>1 cup powdered sugar</div><div>2-4 <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">tblsp</span>. milk</div><div><br /></div><div>When the biscuits are done baking but still warm, spread on the icing. I top mine with rainbow or red, white and green nonpareils. Great when they're still warm, but just as amazing once cool!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Hopefully, I'll be baking and sharing more recipes soon. But that's all for now!</div><div><br /></div><div>Cheers, </div><div>Kim <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Kalunian</span>, cast member</div></div>Kim Kalunianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01074636031279976993noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133208602494647869.post-52303309487372099522011-12-05T12:28:00.002-05:002011-12-05T12:33:42.448-05:00Day Off<p class="MsoNormal">At the end of the “work through” of A Christmas Carol in the Hanover Theatre rehearsal hall yesterday there was a buzz of excitement because, not only had we successfully pieced together the show, but we also knew what was coming – A day off!</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Now, I don’t know about the rest of my cast mates, but <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">my</i> day off isn’t going to be spent lounging around in my pajamas, eating Munchos, and watching ‘Parks and Recreation’ on Netflix. No, sir. There are lines I have to learn, harmonies to <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">think</i> about learning, and lyrics review.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">There is also a blog that I was asked to write -- which, of course, will wait until after all the above things are completed.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The theatre is a tough job, man. And not just for the actors. I know Troy (our talented director) is trying to figure out where we can add pyrotechnics this year, Ilyse (our smart choreographer) is coming up with new dance steps – We are adding a number called “Scrooge’s Dream Ballet” featuring Kevin Hadfield as Scrooge, and Carola (one of the best Stage Managers there is) is coloring in her script and trying to stay within the lines. Like I said, it is a job that takes focus -- even on days off. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">I would go into much more detail, but reruns of 30ROCK just came on and I am getting distracted. I also need to get out of bed.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Until next time -- Peace and Hairgrease!</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Tyler Bellmon, Cast Member</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p> <!--EndFragment-->Tyler Bellmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10997896792804888423noreply@blogger.com0
